Sparkling City by the Sea – Corpus Christi FC

In our first of many Monday Interviews, we decided to have a chat with current Corpus Christi FC Head Coach Sebastian Giraldo

First off congratulations from us here at on a successful first season in a very tough Mid South Conference! What are your expectations after finishing 4th last season and how is the team improving and advancing?

I think all the people associated with the club have high expectations for the team. We feel a great responsibility in trying to deliver a championship to the great fans that supported us and all the new fans in Corpus Christi. We played some excellent soccer at times last year, good enough to beat anybody, and we must figure out consistency and mentality for the duration of the season. We return a large portion of the squad and the full coaching staff so there is a strong foundation and we look to improve in every aspect this year. Our attacking, possession style should be more defined and we expect to benefit from that.

Are there any changes with teams or any additions to teams in the conference this year that you are aware of?

We had OK Energy drop from the conference and added Mississippi Brilla. So the conference probably remains one of the strongest in the league.

What makes Corpus Christi a spot for soccer?

There is a lot of love for soccer and there has been a tremendous amount of talent that has come from this area. We see this as the next logical progression for the development of soccer here. We must provide a pathway to professional systems for the best athletes and allow them to progress in their careers. We have the best youth talent in the area on the team and we plan to showcase them because we know they can play at a high level.

The big news this year was the PDL is officially called USL League Two, how has the league supported you guys as a club in this change over? Are there new standards that you have to attain now that you have the USL Named Attached to your club?

The USL is fantastic at supporting us as a club and helping us out. They have a lot of bright young people working at the USL and I think it shows in the drive and tenacity of the league. I think the standards remain the same and the new changes have helped establish a more clear route for athletes and a stronger structure to the league. Our goal remains the same which is to push the level of soccer in CC and continue to provide a pathway to the professional game.

As you know seasons end and begin with Sponsorships, what Sponsors do you want to take time to thank for this upcoming season?

La Joya Bay Resort

Coastal Orthopedics

Reliant ER

Coastal Bend Distilling Co.

Is there a Supporters Group you would like to acknowledge?

It is a club priority to support with any aspect of a supporter’s group this year. We had an amazing atmosphere last year and know that a supporter’s group will only enhance the excitement. It will be their first year and I hope to see them getting wild at the games.

We thank you for the time and is there anything else you would like to let fans know about?

We were very honored to be a 2018 USL League Two Finalist for Franchise of the Year and New Franchise of the Year. in 2019, we hope to extend our success with the community and on the field. CC has proven to be a fantastic place for high-level soccer and I cannot wait for that game atmosphere again.
